Discovered: Katie competed in the International Modeling and Talent Association by singing, dancing, and reciting a monologue from To Kill a Mockingbird. But her real passion was acting, so when she was seventeen, Katie went to Los Angeles to audition for movies. Luckily, on her second audition, she was cast in the movie, The Ice Storm.
Resume: Her big break came when a videotape was sent to "Dawson's Creek" producers. The producers were so interested that they even scheduled a special audition for her since she had to miss the original date for the opening night of her all-girls Catholic high school musical, Damn Yankees. She eventually landed the series regular role of Joey Potter.
In the first year of 'Dawson's Creek' Katie starred in two movies, Disturbing Behavior and Go. The next year she starred alongside Michael Douglas in Wonder Boys, playing Hannah Green, a published author and a boarder at her teacher's house, who tries to seduce him.
In 2002, the film Abandon gave Katie her first lead role, playing a college student whose boyfriend has vanished. Her film career continued after 'Dawson's Creek' came to an end in 2003. That year Katie starred in Pieces of April, playing a girl who wants to leave her reckless past behind her and give her family the perfect Thanksgiving dinner before her mother dies. Also in that year, Katie's role as the ideal nurse in the dark musical, The Singing Detective, showcased her dance skills.
Returning to a more light-hearted movie, Katie took on the lead role in First Daughter, playing Samantha, a girl who's going to college amidst the chaos of being the President's daughter.
Katie's most critically acclaimed role has come in the recent film, Batman Begins, where she plays Rachel Dawes, a childhood sweetheart and love interest to Batman/Bruce Wayne. Just before the opening of that movie Katie began a much-publicized romance with Tom Cruise that continues to garner media attention.
